About Rath Yatra

The divine journey from temple to the people.

Rath Yatra, the Chariot Festival of Shri Jagannath, celebrates the public journey of Lord Jagannath with His elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The deities come out of the temple and travel in grand wooden chariots, giving darshan to everyone, including those who may not be able to enter the sanctum.

For devotees, the pulling of the chariot is not only a festival act. It is a prayer that the Lord may enter the heart, remove ego and guide life toward dharma, compassion and surrender.

Jagannath Balabhadra Subhadra
History and meaning

A festival rooted in Shri Jagannath tradition.

01

Ancient Puri tradition

The best-known Rath Yatra is held at Puri in Odisha, where the Jagannath temple has been a major center of worship for centuries. The festival is described in temple tradition as the annual journey of the deities toward the Gundicha Temple.

02

Three sacred chariots

Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra each travel in a separate decorated chariot. The chariots are built anew for the festival, reminding devotees that devotion must be renewed with faith, service and humility.

03

Darshan for all

Rath Yatra carries a powerful message of accessibility. The Lord comes out to bless the people, and the road itself becomes a moving temple filled with kirtan, seva and the joy of shared devotion.

Devotional reflection

Let the Lord’s chariot move through the heart.

On Rath Yatra, devotees remember that spiritual life is a journey. When the heart becomes humble, loving and ready for seva, Shri Jagannath’s grace becomes the true guide of that journey.
